I won't debate the philosophy of WGA. All I know is that with my computer WGA works. If it breaks, then I'll go through the same process I did the last time it broke: I went to the MS site, sent an email explaining my problem. MS sent me a problem code, and in a back and forth on the phone and in email with a number of software engineers I sent settings back and forth for them to attempt to figure out what exactly was broken on my machine. The first time it happened to me I decided to wipe my drive and do a clean install, so the root cause was never found.
My personal experience is that MS wants to find out what causes false positives and fix it. Apparently I gather from their decision to give a yellow warning is that there are enough WGA failures that they are concerned with alienating their customers.
I do think times are changing. Microsoft is under attack for their behavior and it is having an affect. No one can see the future but that said, we can predict that linux is going to make more inroads into average people's computers and Apple has become a more viable choice in this Windows-centric world we currently have. It will be very interesting to see the landscape in ten years. If the past has any answers is that the world changes in ways we just can't predict.
Piracy is wrong.. I think no one argues with that. The issue is clouded when a company that is viewed negatively tries things that address piracy; people view that in a very negative way. How many people here remember when a lot of programs came with a hardware dongle that had to be connected to the parallel port to allow the program to run? Piracy is a problem. There are plenty of small companies that failed because a good software product they produced through their hard work was pirated so much they couldn't stay in business.
Another thing that clouds the issue is how, during the early days of the internet, you could get a lot of things for free? Remember, too, it wasn't that many years ago when a lot of people downloaded songs from Napster for free. Getting something for free became so common a lot of people lost the sense of the right and wrong of it. - Posted by: Insight Driver Posted on: 02/28/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
