Chris Paget was using a self-built reader/writer for the demonstration. It is quite possible (though not necessarily true) that this device would infringe on HID's patents, which means their claims are not entirely baseless. Stupid and oppressive, yes; completely fantastic, no.
This is in no way an attempt at excusing HID's blatant suppression of information, just making sure the picture being presented is as complete as possible.
