Been there
Having been in your "made up" situation many times, it is amazing how many times this can happen and yet system owners and QA organizations still don't understand the need for "validated" systems to be patched. Even though the constant patching has become annoying, not getting the system patched IS NOT the fault of Microsoft.

The solution to this problem has been to just turn off the "validated" systems that are not allowed to be patched if a worm comes through. Some of them never get turned back on, which is a good thing for many of these systems.
