Makes it easier (in theory) to help users...
Why do computer manufactures insist on putting a back door on retail PCs?

Simple: It is often easier for a support technician to enter a computer remotely than to explain how to fix a problem if the user is a "tech-turkey". Do I agree with the inclusion of Support.com software on my computers? No. Give me something like TightVNC with SSL instead.

On the other hand, when I found the software on a HP I recently acquired, I contacted HP about it; they did not know the software was still being put on their PCs... Their support personnel knew how to remove the software, but were not trained in the safe usage of said software.

I wonder if that means that the left hand (tech support) doesn't know what the right hand (the folks that do the images for the PCs) is doing? If so, that's really disturbing, but another issue altogether.
