"How would these security firms and anti-virus people know about a worm that hasn't been released yet, UNLESS THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT ??? "

For one, Symantec has an enterprise anti virus software available (not norton antivirus) that runs off a server to keep the network updated at all times. (instead of each workstation having NAV 2004 installed and have to go to each individual workstation to upgrade it, the server pushes updates to each workstation (node)).

On top of that, the enterprise/corporate version is capable of a "bloodhound" feature which monitors network activity, and when something "fishy" goes on that the server can not determine what it is, it sends a report immediately to Symantec who then analyizes it and within hours it can send an antivirus to the company.
