Patching my iBook - done automatically (and several more than just 3-4 per year - so far, I have had that many for the OS already since its release, if not more) and is no more or less painful than patching my Windows machines.
I use an SUS server to download patches and install on my timetable. Takes a few minutes and is FAR less than a full time job. (1 hour per week? Maybe in a busy week, otherwise not.)
Get your rants straight if you want to be taken seriously and not dismissed as just another clueless basher who can't wait to gloat over a vulnerability.
