Actually, there is more to this story...
This isn't the first time this has happened in Snort. The following was taken from [url=http://www.securityfocus.com/advisories/5302]Securityfocus.com[/url] and describes a similar problem found in 2003.

Sourcefire (more specifically Matt Watchinski) made [url=http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11349]this[/url] statement back in 2005:

“We vet everything that goes into Snort, but as with all software, bugs are sometimes missed. Moving forward we intend to double our efforts to detect these sorts of issues.”

Maybe they need to double those efforts once again...
