I like m0n0wall. It is FreeBSD based

It boots off a CD and the config files to a floppy. Hard drive is not needed so it is quiet. It has less latency than any appliance you can buy. M0n0wall forces you to choose a name and password. Unfortunately a pc uses more watts of electricity. So on your appliance, push in the reset switch and change your name and password like I did. Not as difficult in setting up another pc as a router.
