Harsh punishment unlikely
While he stands to serve time in an American prison, it's doubtful that he'll get the full maximum sentence. There are many factors to consider when deciding sentencing. For one, if the systems did have blank administrator passwords as an earlier poster stated, that could and should be taken into account. Likewise, his citizenship in a friendly country will probably also be taken into account. (We want to keep that country friendly and not be seen as imposing an excessive punishment.)

All told, I'd be surprised if he got more than 10 years -- still a significant chunk of your life in an extremely unpleasant place, but not the life sentence that 60 years would be. Plus, there is the possibility of parole after a few years, with the parole to be served in Britain. All in all, enough to show that both countries take illegal hacking seriously, but not enough for there to be a serious discussion of "unreasonable sentencing."
