I think you've mentioned every thing that's wrong with Vista. To put it in plain terms, Microsoft has tried to make things better. It has to be frank, but the number of levels of abstraction that the entire OS is built on is not good.

It's like constructing a building without a plan.

There is always some little flaw, somewhere in the plan, that might bring the entire thing down. I mean that managing the development of such a huge product is difficult, and problems creep in, are left unnoticed and then exploited by hackers, et al.

It is the job of computer security firms like Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Alwil etc. to make sure that these holes are plugged.

The job of Microsoft employees is to build an OS, but the job of security firm employees is to make them safe. As log as both of them do their jobs well, all goes well.
