XPS nonstandard and proprietary?
Not all of XPS is standardized yet, but large portions have been. See http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/downloads.mspx for more info.

And as for proprietary, it's no more proprietary than PDF--in fact it's more open. The XPS specs are published and available for royalty-free use. See http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/xpscommunitypromise.mspx.
