an answer. We use several versions of Windows everything from win95 in a few PC's, win98se in a large percentage of PC's, Windows NT, and 2000 in the newer PC's. Already some of the current round of patches have caused user problems. They loose their desktop information (stuff they depend on to maker their work simpler and faster) So rather than doing all the PC's Automatically we have a tech do them and he/she is there to help the user if the patch messes something the user depends on to get his/her work done.

As for the purpose of IT. I can only speak for myself as a Mac tech. My job it to put our any fires that come up in a fast a fashion as possible to allow production to continue.

I'm not certain a Patch is the best way to accomplish that goal? After all a patch is in essence taking productivity out of the user/companies time in order to try and prevent some sort of possible issue in the future...and I guess that is good preventative medicine. However our two PC techs usually are enough to keep the day to day work flow on the PC's going nicely. When it comes patch time and worm time....necessary work like recovering crashed Windows, or hard drives or back nic issues or any number of day to day issues suffer a delay due to the whole patching thing. And there for on two front productivity suffers, the patching itself, and the normal day to day work that get's put off in the mean time.
