Why home users don't do that
Home users often don't download patches because:

1. A 50mb download over their dial-up connection ties up their phone for days with no guarantee of success. Many of them have ISPs that automatically disconnect after a specified amount of idle time, and the MS servers are usually overwhelmed when a new patch is released, which makes idle time a certainty.

2. They've applied patches before that bunged up their machine. I've consulted for many people who hosed their computer with an update and had to pay me $75 an hour to fix it. Hope you'll forgive them for being a bit gunshy after that. (Note: I did suggest they bill Microsoft for my hours of work, but no one has taken me up on that yet.)

3. They don't know the patches are out because they want their computer to be like their toaster -- plug it in and let it work.
