In a home environment..
There are two cases:
1)
Users aren't technically adept. In this case, I'd recommend automatic downloading and applying of patches. The chance of a patch seriously harming your computer is much lower than that of viral code (worm, trojan, etc.).

2)
Users that are technically adept (at least one, maintaining the home machine(s)).
In this case, either apply the patch right away and hope it works (can System Restore "uninstall" a patch? Not sure about this one..), or wait for a week or two after the patch has been released. After this period of time, it's highly likely any incompatbility will have been found, and hopefully corrected.. as well, within a 1-2 week turnaround, we usually don't see the worms/viruses. (Of course, if viral code is already in the wild, apply the patch IMMEDIATELY).

Just common sense, I think.. although it seems that many people are lacking it.
