An Overly Simple View!
Although it's true that Linux is not in the Virus/Malware spotlight, that is only because there are too few for the Virus makers to be bothered with. Also Mac and Unix are not 'open' systems and also partially escape the attention of the 'Bad Guys'. There are two basic types of very clever people - those that concentrate on their work for the good of others (and themselves of course), and those suffering from some psychosis and a desire to hurt others - mental vandals. No matter how good and clever you make something valuable or desireable, there will always be some low-life who will take sadistic pleasure in breaking or damaging it.
