is ALL security software flawed?
Hello there!

I cannot comment on the TrendMicro 'flaw', but having used both Symantec and Computer Associates security software over some years, I am beginning to have doubts about the protection they offer.

For instance, on this particular machine I am using the Symantec suite in its latest incarnation, with all signature files up-to-date etc.

But as in previous versions, Symantec regularly recommends, in its pop-up messages, to "Always block" not only certain legitimate Windows XP SP2 components but even its own program components!

On another machine I ditched Symantec because of this, and the failure of its support team to give me a reasonable explanation, and returned to CA's Internet Security Suite.

Lo and behold, an initial scan found six recent infections, including three phishing attempts and three trojan/worm infections such as Luder.L, which were detected but not deleted or quarantined!

I then ran a separate PestPatrol scan, which asserted that I had serious infections hidden deep in my operating system, which required manual intervention. The CA pop-up directed me to a certain web address for appropriate action, but the page showed no rpt no relevant information.

A local (?) support person e-mailed me a number of suggestions, but when I replied with requested logs attached - and some strong misgivings about the company's products being fit for purpose - I received no reply.

So for the past few weeks I have been using a Linux box running openSuSE 10.2 for all my transactional internet use, hoping to be at least somewhat safer this way than with big-name 'security' products containing apparent flaws or providing useless 'support'...

Cheers,

Carioca
