XP firewall is very good!
I believe that Windows firewall in XP is quite good. It has always been in stealth mode when I have tested it online. That is very good compared to many other firewalls. It is also extremely stable which many other firewalls are not. In that sense it could be considered to be the best software firewall available for Windows. It does not regulate, though, outbound communications, but a hardware router in homes and businesses doesn?t either do that. Most businesses seem to be happy with such a limited solution. I myself prefer a firewall that also regulates outbound communications. I also think that it is a very different thing when a person wants a firewall and is interested in doing the necessary configuration compared to a person who has not this interest. Windows XP customers does include also those customers who have no interest in security whatsoever and will complain, without knowing what to do, when the firewall blocks their access to the internet. A firewall which regulates outbound communications will, also, burden RAM memory more than a firewall that does not have this function. All PCs does not have large memories.

Windows Defender does not remove tracking cookies as many others anti spyware tools do such as Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy etc. There is a debate going on if tracking cookies are spyware or not. It seems to be that many believes that only third-party cookies can be considered to be spyware. This is why you found out that there is a difference between the scanning results of Windows Defender compared to Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, but if Windows Defender does a good job or not is partly a matter of preference.

Personally I prefer anti spyware tools that wipes out anything that can possibly be adware or spyware such as tracking cookies. I do not want to risk anything as they can be third-party cookies and those tracking cookies can also disturb and cause problems when surfing the internet. Firefox is also a very good defence against spyware and adware. One of the very best software against spyware and adware is Spyware Doctor. As I use Firefox, I only need to scan my PC now and then with Spyware Doctor, Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy etc. Nearly always they will not find anything!

As an antivirus solution I use Avast! Home Edition and it is free as a bird and it is really good!

Those who use Windows and have security problems are, probably, nearly all those people who ignore firewalls and security software altogether.
