Do not talk about compatibility 'cause...
...I always use PDF to send complex docs that need printing to people because MSO is incompatible with MSO.

Many people still use MSO 2k, XP or 2k3 and some went ahead and gave MS even more money for MSO 2k7. When they all exchange complex documents, they look and print differently in each version.

I layout my complex docs in OOo then create a PDF with full content page, hyperlinks, etc and sent that file. Everyone can view and print it the way it was ment to be seen.

Furthermore, I have been using OOo since version 1.0 --and I also used the earlier versions of Star Office from 4.0-- and I have not yet had problems with version compatibility.

I also use OOo to read all MSO docs I get and have no problems with simple docs. With complex docs I may have the same issues that the various MSO version users have so no surprise there. I can also save my OOo docs as MSO docs for MSO lusers.

The problem isn't that there is slight incompatibility with OOo and MSO docs but that there is incompatibility between MSO docs and MSO docs produced by different versions of MSO.

Besides, if I send someone a complex OASIS document such as an *.odt word processor document with complex layout, they can always download a renderer for free such as OOo which not only allows them to view the file but edit it as well. I cannot do that with the free MSO Word viewer.

Open standards such as open file formats have their advantages.
