Even with SSL, you can't be sure.
Of course if the website has an SSL Certificate, you will see a padlock but may not be noticed by the millions.

So the EV SSL is very strict, so with IE 7, the address bar changes color from white to green, plus, the name of the company who uses the EV SSL certificate.
