product catalog file crashes during live update
Dear Friends,

I was once a loyal Norton customer
and I ran Disk Doctor almost every day
on Windows 98/SE. I added Norton
Internet Security Professional, and
one day their central product catalog
file got corrupted during "Live Update."

Not only did this affect all Symantec
software on that one machine:
the "hooks" hidden inside Windows
system files were impossible to remove,
without re-formatting C: and reloading
everything.

So, one long weekend, I bit the bullet and
did just that, but without re-installing
ANY Symantec software (NONE!). Instead,
I switched to System Suite 5: www.v-com.com
and I continue to be very happy with that
decision.

Recently, I noticed that Symantec has
acquired PowerQuest, so now another
favorite program of mine -- Drive Image 7 --
is also vulnerable to failures in the product
catalog file, because that otherwise
excellent software is ALSO integrated
into that same product catalog now.

I have 34 years of experience with computers,
and I have learned to keep myself very
far removed from bureaucrats who think they
can engineer system software.

When I purchased a Sony multiformat DVD
drive from Office Depot about 18 months ago,
it came with excellent CD & DVD burner
software from Veritas. That software has
a very simple and powerful "wizard" mode,
which has worked every time for me, without
fail.

Guess what? Symantec just acquired Veritas.

Imagine my dismay to watch all of these
excellent packages succumb to corporate
acquisitions that result in obvious
degradations in software useability,
reliability, and functionality.

Why hasn't Symantec learned that,
when a tool is working well,
LEAVE IT ALONE!!

CHEEESH!!

Sincerely yours,
/s/ Paul Andrew Mitchell
