What freedom do you give up?
While it's true this won't stop a terrorist I don't know what freedom you would lose by not having this ID card. You have a Drivers license right? That's ID and you are logged in a database which is often shared with other law enforcement agencies. A national ID would be no different. What about a passport, same thing there. Birth certificate, credit cards, and all those other cards in your wallet. This is just another one with a picture. I don't see how any freedoms are lost by having another ID card.

Now maybe if they say that you must have you ID card on you at all time and you must present you papers for inpection at the request of any authorized official, then that I'd say is a loss of freedom. But really that has little to do with a national ID card. It could be done with the existing ID we have today. A national ID just make it better for you as person who is under this type of scrutiny.
