I have over
380 e-mail addresses in my address book. Of those, 76 are family (wife's and mine), 102 are close or good friends of both the wife and I, the rest are acquaintances or old clients. I generally write the family everyday to keep them abreast of the kids and general information. The friends I will send links to news articles I know they would appreciate and read. I also correspond with them about a variety of things as well.

But what I am noticing is the following:
1. Many of my e-mails are now being flagged as spam. (I know because there are several instances where I have sent e-mails that required a response and received none. When I called and spoke to the recipients that didn't reply and asked if they got the e-mail the answer was no... and I am on their accept list!)

2. Because there is so much crap starting to make it through the filters again, many of those in my address book have decided to say the hell with e-mail. Too much of a pain trying to filter out the good from the bad. (Solution to that of course is to you an e-mail address that does not use words in the dictionary... so far my primary home e-mail address has managed to escape the massive influx of spam... and I have had the address for about 8 years now!)

3. Time... ironically time seems to be another issue.

4. Many are on a PC at the office for a minimum of 8 hours but up to 14 hours, the last thing they want to do is get back on a PC at home. I am even getting that way now. I spend 8-10 hours a day on a PC at my new job (although there are times where I get to work outside as well!) and I find myself getting home and just not wanting to deal with a computer let alone e-mail.

5. With the rash of security issues, many now making main stream news, people are playing it safe and just not dealing with e-mail. This combined with the amount of software required to keep a Windows PC secure, people are either not using it or keeping it up to date so they get infected and the desire to be online falls off even more (I hear this a lot... I also still get a lot of calls asking me to clean up another Windows box.)

I used to get a lot of correspondence from my friends and family. But now it's if anything a trickle of what it used to be. When I ask about it, many of the reasons above are why. But the biggest one is... all the crap that is coming in everyday that is either trying to enlarge your johnson or infect your Windows machine. They are getting tired of it and since it's only getting worse, the simple solution is to just stop using the technology that is causing the problem in the first place. devil
