slim competition
"works" is Norton System Works. As for competition you may get lots of links when you Google but the majority of what comes up is not really competition for Symantec. Unless I've read great reviews &/or heard the name lots then I'm leary. Having tried most programs related to security I am still using Symantec NIS & System Works. I beta tested Norton Confidential & I like it also. True Symantec is by far the most comprehensive, does load up your system but offers some fair utilities. When your system is running good & configured really well then Symantec works much better. What Symantec lacks in free phone support it makes up for with its many scans & auto helpers & the knowledge base. I've put in feedback on tools & mentioned things I'd like to see in a Symantec product & when a new version came out the suggestions I'd made were there. I still run into problems here & there but always can find help at their site....so realistically I can't complain.

Zone Alarm for all the hype was terrible because it asks you about so many things that it gave no info on. And if not configured right you may as well not have it on because it will cause more damage than good. You can google the terms but who knows which one of the sites to believe & which are going to be loading crap on your computer?

I tried Panda & was highly disappointed. Plus when I called & asked their tech a question he said, "I don't know why they put this out because it doesn't work, doesn't do nearly enough." For real. I gave it one day & that was all I could stand.

A post to this article has what looks like good alternatives & the poster (sorry I can't recall your name at the moment) gave links to the reviews. After reading about PR Safe Connect I have downloaded the trial to check it out.

Webroot Spy Sweeper is an excellent program. It does most everything for you which with all we have to have to be secure that is a very good thing.

One that didn't get mentioned that saved me with its auto sweep was Defender(MS freebie). A trojan on my computer kept shutting down all my security then Defender came up with a scheduled sweep & caught the trojan. (*I didn't have Webroot's Spysweeper yet when I got the trojan), & it was a "Stealware" trojan that did hideous damage to my computer. I not only lost everything, it slowed my harddrives & gave out all my credit cards which were promptly maxed. Ouch.

McAfee has never worked for my systems for some reason but I have clients that didn't like Symantec that I used McAfee on & they love McAfee.

Competition? not much out there that is 'deep' & 'comprehensive.'
