I was thinking after I posted (and I can't see a way to edit posts) that Symantec could solve this problem by offering a solution like BigFix. This is a patch management service. Invisus uses it to make sure that the whole system is up to date. It checks software beyond what MS Update checks, and will alert the user if there is a pending security patch that needs to be installed. It's quite thorough, and Invisus even uses it to communicate to all users with Security Bulletins in the case of a threat that is circulating quickly and doesn't have a fix for it yet.

Why doesn't Symantec just employ this solution or one like it? It's not that tough, I would think. Perhaps a little spendy, but it would save them all this bad press and loss of consumer confidence...
