Potentially usable for fishing expeditions
Let's say the FBI is suspicious of somebody, but doesn't have enough hard evidence to get a warrant, so an FBI agent poses as the target of the investigation and requests phone records, etc. in hopes of finding something more substantial. The phone records themselves wouldn't be admissable as evidence (since they were fraudulently obtained), but they might lead to something that is.

Of course, J. Edgar Hoover was alleged to use FBI files for political blackmail purposes, but he's long dead and there have been no allegations that the practice has revived.

Just thinking...
