No-fob solution
How about a low-tech solution like including a dynamic feature that the user can specify themselves, such as the current date or time, or the current date or time in reverse, as part of a password? For example, right now:

Passphrase*16:44:17#20091009

If only the user knew what the dynamic portion is made up of, then the key logger would have a much higher hurdle to jump. The e-mail provider could offer users a selection of dynamic options or allow the user to specify one of their own.

It is also possible to have short & simple passwords that aren't weak. Take, for example, your car registration number, perhaps followed by a special character & then a short passphrase. Even better, your first car's registration number, or your last car's registration number, or your girlfriend's car's registration number, something that nobody would guess, but that you know by heart and is a mixture of letters and numbers? It would even be almost safe to write down, e.g. you would know that "Ford not going to Town" means the registration number of the Ford you owned back in 2005, followed by a ! and then the letters ngtT. If you gave your car a nickname, then even better!
