Adobe Updater ties up the CPU @ 100% plus it runs...
multiple copies of itself when the Internet connection is not available at our location. We use a Internet filter called iPrism and the user must authenticate to the Internet before their PC can connect via port 80 (http:). So, if the user has not authenticated to the iPrism yet and opens a PDF file in Adobe Reader 8.0, it immediately tries to connect to the Internet in search of updates. But since the "pipe" has not been opened, AdobeUpdater.exe takes up 100% of the CPU and it also runs multiple copies (as seen in the task manager) which nearly locks up the PC.

What we have done to alleviate this issue as well as the "in-your-face" issue of the updater as a whole, we have turned off the auto-update feature altogether. The users here don't (or shouldn't) have the ability to update the software to start with and this clears that issue up as well. If the Adobe Reader releases a fix for this, then maybe we will turn this feature back on, but until then, when we install Reader v8.0, we disable the updater.

Hope this helps!
Don
