Google's plug and financial disclosures
My impression from reading the article is that Google did an excellent job of plugging the flaw as soon as they were apprised of its existence. Perhaps ideaflashed@... would be advised not to let himself be dissuaded by his unfortunate experience with Microsoft but instead to take Google's appeal to bug hunters for cooperation seriously, at least until their lack of interest in such has been demonstrated. As far as the first reply to this article is concerned, I should like to suggest to ZDNet that it, like modern medical and other scientific journals, require financial disclosures of its contributors. As a reader, I get the strong impression that certain people are paid to puff a certain firm and its products and/or to pan others. It would be worthwhile seeing whether the number of these postings, which are of no conceivable interest to anyone but their authors and their paymasters, if any, would be reduced if financial disclosures were required. Not to require of others what I am unwilling to do myself, I hereby declare that I have no financial connexions with any of the firms mentioned in the main article or the responses thereto that have hitherto been published....
