>The US is not, as you say, the "front runner" in web development. CERN, a Europian company, created the internet. Sure, an American company owns the domain name register, but they haven't really done much for the internet, they just make tonnes of cash and occaisionally cut the wire to a country the President doesn't like.
You seem to have a remarkable view of history, and which countries have contributed the technology and resources which created the Internet. If the US hasn't "really done much for the Internet", who has?
Who is it that (you claim) "makes tonnes [sic] of cash"? The US does not (yet) tax Internet usage, and thus hasn't made a single penny from the Internet. Of course, US _companies_ have done so, as have companies and individuals world wide. I believe this is a good thing.
When has the US ever (much less "occasionally") "cut the wire to a country the President doesn't like"? You can't base a credible argumment on fictitious accusations.
>"It's complete crap that Europe has anything to do with communism, or that communism is bad - the countries that try it never really have communism in mind, they just pretend they do."
Despite your profanity, Europe is patently socialist. Even the "conservatives" in Europe are socialists, just slightly less so than their "liberal" counterparts. It's only a slight exaggeration (if any) to label them communists, and it isn't a distortion of their political philosophy --- as exemplified by your very argument.
I believe that Communism _is_ bad, as are other forms of socialism. Even if it weren't inherently evil, communism is unworkable. Profit drives individuals as well as corporations, and there is no motivation to perform without a profit potential. It's only by forced labour that communist countries survive at all (which is the primary reason the system is evil).
To claim that communist countries aren't really communist is a silly argument. Capitalist countries aren't really capitalist, and democratic countries aren't really democratic. Yet, these are the designations we use to describe them. We are not discussing ivory-tower philosophy, but rather pragmatic realities.
>"Europe has no set social class, and people become rich and famous from nothing (Seriously, what the hell gave you that idea), for example J.K. Rowling and Christina Agulera."
My point was/is that Europe has a far more class-segregated society that the US (this is well-established fact), and there is far more upward mobility in the US than anywhere else in the world. I don't consider the temporal "success" of pop stars to be indicative of the opportunities available to the average person. Besides, I suspect most of Mr. Rowling and Ms. Agulera's revenues derive from US (not European) sources.
>"You say that the US is not ran by businesses. Officially, this is true, but the US (And UK) has replaced leaders of countries for favorable business (See Operation AJAX"
You can't prove anything with fiction. It is the duty of nations to protect their citizenry, and the interests of their citizenry. Not surprisingly, the interests of the citizenry often coincide with the interest of business. After all, in non-socialist countries, it is the businesses who provide jobs and revenues which keep the country and its population healthy and wealthy.
France, Germany, Russia, China, Vietnam, and most of the world have replaced leaders of (other) countries for various reasons far more selfish and counter-productive than protecting oil reserves which their citizens depend on.
We've gone rather far afield of discussing the (toothless) "European crackdown on e-mail scammers" haven't we? - Posted by: cdgoldin Posted on: 01/08/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
