good thoughts but you are off base
Apple never competed with Microsoft. They has their ultra proprietary equipment and that was it. I've owned apple machines and have a close relative with O$X right now.
But to make the assumption we'd be on DOS 3.whatever is silly.
Apple chose, for whatever reasons, to not compete with Microsoft and open up to tcp/ip for a long time and many other standards and refused to allow their OS to run on easily available equipment. That was not Microsoft's fault. They moved forward in a very business like fashion. Sure it may have been moved along faster, but that's simply not how American business has historically worked when a company enjoys the lion's share of the market. I admit I've wished for years MS would have moved quicker. They have a world class research facility. A real R&D center and it's too bad much of it has never seen the light of day. MS has had some of the greatest coders of our time over the years. But they did not have control of the direction. But I don't blame Gates or anyone. It's business, it's the way it is. Apple had every chance to go full retail on the x86 architecture long long ago and MS would not have what they have today. They were the only company at that time that could have stopped Microsoft.
