Yeah, that will work.
The problem with the "masses" setting their thresholds is they are still biased. This site, without much doubt, is heavy on people that don't like Microsoft. In fact, many attest with their moniker or otherwise to hate or wish for the demise of Microsoft. So the "masses" start off right away being a bunch of zealots that, per many many polls here on ZDNet, are 80 to 90% linux and apple strong on this site. If anything, the Windows users, but for a few like me (not hundreds like those that hate MS) are the most openminded users here. Most of them have experience with other OSs. I've personally worked with Unix, Linux, novell, PolyForth, Windows, MUMPS. The zealots on the other hand believe their OS is the only one imaginable and this would wreak havoc with your moderation system right off. What you see as objective is very subjective to most others.
( By the way, the ZD net techs that run this site are linux folks as you know)
