My own take
Where I live a group of 8 Egyptians were rounded up in Oct.
2001 and taken to jail in Chicago and denied access to lawyers.
They were held as "material witnesses" for two weeks. The
"ringleader" ran a popular Italian restaurant and his friends
worked there. His crimes against humanity? He had sent $ back
to his family in Egypt and he had taken flying lessons at the local
airport. He is still making it in his business but it has never fully
recovered from the stigma of him being a suspected terrorist.
Speaking as a local public school teacher I can identify since the
secretary of education has called all of us who belong to the NEA
"terrorists". 1984 is here.
