Archive.org Huzzah Dunn and HP
The real story here is Archive.org which has been performing a public service for quite some time now with little recognition. When a web site is changed - especially a web site describing privacy rights - there is little public protection. Lets say when you provide information about yourself you read the privacy notice. It looks good so you provide the information. Then a month or year later the privacy notice is changed. Why even bother reading the notice?

This year all privacy notices that are online should also provide RSS feeds. It is more than just a good idea. It should be law. US consumers shouldn't have to rely on Archive.com. Then when you provide information, to win that prize or subscribe to that cell phone service, you will at least be aware that something gastapo like may be happening.

I continue to speculate that this kind of a story is being fed by those representing Patsy Dunn and HP who need to create a perception that there is a database "out there" that can be used to steel identity. This helps the wrong doers avoid justice because the most likely source of the social security numbers used to steel identity is the payroll department at HP itself. That department likely kept SSNs on all current and former HP employees and contractors.
