Nah, competition will keep quality high...
At least in theory, if M$ releases decent APIs, the onus will be on these 3rd party AVs to deliver quality. When one slips up, it becomes clear that it isn't the API that was lacking, but the vendor's use of it and implementation. So I firmly believe that with the right APIs, there's no reason that quality and security have to suffer. Time will tell what the results will be.
