Are you so naive as to think...
...as to think "the government" is infallible? Do you think it impossible the "the government" will never decide, based misinformation or misinterpretation, that you're a drug dealer? That actually happened a couple of weeks ago to an old woman. The woman was killed by police while defending herself from people who had just smashed down her front door--the cops had neither knocked nor identified themselves.

Are you sure that the government will never abuse the information they have on you? Could your name suggest you're a Muslim? A number of Muslims have been given very hard times by the American government for little little, if any, more than that. Do you have some sort of job where disclosure of your identity and your job could be disastrous? Remember Valerie Plame? And are you sure that "the government" is telling the truth that her outing wasn't deliberate?

Like the old quote says, power tends to corrupt, and history is replete with more demonstrations of the truth of that you are likely to be able to imagine. At the moment, the US Federal Government is not only the single most powerful entity in the country, it's the single most powerful entity on the plant. Are you sure that they're immune to that tendency to corruption? Recent headlines aren't reassuring on that point, and it would be the only exception I'm aware of in two thousand years of Western history.
