What exactly do you think Symantec should do differently?

They released the patch in May. My version of NIS automatically goes out and finds, downloads, and applies any updates which Symantec releases. If my version of NIS (or NAV) 2006 ever had this vulnerability then it fixed it by itself.

The problem is with corporate versions of their software which some companies (such as the one for whom I work) don't allow to perform automatic updates. But then those same companies don't necessarily take the responsibility to ensure all of the software is updated like they should, so those companies are to blame for PCs which still have this vulnerability 7 months later.

Don't get me wrong. I'm NOT a big Symantec supporter. I think the quality of their software has declined steadily over the last few years and I've told them that several times. I've been testing various replacements for them over the past few months and certainly hope to be on other, more dependable software within the next few months.

BUT, in THIS case, I don't see what else that Symantec could have done. They published the patch but they can't make anyone apply it to their software. I certainly hope that you apply this same criticism of Symantec to M$ and the shoddy software and shoddy support which they've ever provided. Whatever you feel that Symantec has done wrong here, M$ has done 10-fold worse. Standing next to M$, Symantec looks pretty good...
