This story and the one involving UCLA are making it appear that there is a large database out there with SSNs and other data which can be used by those hired by Dunn and Hurd at HP to steal identities. Lets recognize these kinds of stories for what they are. They are the lobby efforts of legals to get exectutives charged with the crime of identity theft off the hook.

Prior to the HP theft of the HP employees and CNET and WSJ reporters identities did anyone think such a database existed? It would have been a grand conspiracy theory. But not one I had never been exposed to. All those who work in the medial and banking fields know that records are private.

Dunn, Hurd et all likely obtained SSNs for the HP employees at least from HP Personnel or from reports or computers they had access to.
