It doesn't just crash the player
This flaw allows the criminals working for the digital rights and media interests to prop open a door to from your computer to their servers and allows them to see what programs you have on your computer and what files are there.

I know because I got this on a file sharing website and wasn't able to shut down WMP and the malicious file set windows services to allow them access to my computer.
