It's because Office prompts you before opening
If you click a link to a Windows Media file, or go to a site that embeds a WM file, it simply starts playing. You could be owned right then.

Whereas IE and Outlook both prompt you when you click a link to a Word document (where the prompt's default button is "Cancel"), warning you not to open it if you don't trust it.

I'd say that is a good explanation of why the WM bug is of higher importance.
