Also speaking from experience
YBK: Don't count on Don Rupert for everything you "know."

I have no idea who Don Rupert is, and most assuredly do not derive my knowledge from that source.

YBK: The calculations come through just fine, thank you -- as does the formatting.

NOT in my experience. I downloaded the lastest 100MB Open Office release several weeks ago. It refused to install on any of my Windows 98 machines, claiming to be missing some essential file (which apparently wasn't included in the 100MB download, despite claims that it was compatible with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP). I then installed it on a Windows 2000 machine, and tried to read in two documents. One document was simple HTML which both IE and Firefox display correctly with no problem. Open Office couldn't even get the fonts correctly, much less the formatting. Then I read in a MS Word document containing a simple two column table, and a few simple calculations. Open Office messed up the fonts, font sizes, and paragraph formatting; and replaced ALL the calculated fields with blanks. I then uninstalled this severely flawed and totally useless product.

YGK: Good thing, too, since there have been several times over the last few years when MSOffice totally b0rk3d a document that a group was working on, to the extent that trying to open it in MSOffice caused MSWord to crash. Load into OO.o, no prob, save out, it's a fraction of the size, and it reads in to MSOffice just fine -- indistinguishable from the last good copy and complete with change history etc.

Are you speaking from actual experience or wishful thinking? If Open Office can't handle the two simple documents with which I tested it (and it can't), I have trouble believing it can handle anything.

I might add that WordPerfect has no trouble handling any of my documents, so there is a REAL alternative to MS Office.
