Re: No Kidding
In part the end user needs to become more proactive in learning some basic security measures and keeping their firewalls, AV software, and OS updated. OTOH, the software writers certainly could go a lot further in simplifying the interface. How many more times, for example, am I going to get the Norton query "Do you want to create an automatic rule?" when I sync my PDA?

With a wife and two teenage kids, I don't have hours a day to educate myself. And I am above average in computer skills. I use and program MatLab at my job in the lab. When the power supply in our home PC broke, I called the tech support line asking them to ship me a new power supply, patiently waited while the tech stepped me through the 25 steps I had already taken to diagnose the problem, and then finally shipped me the new power supply that I installed myself rather than take it to the warranty repair facility. While I was at it, I installed a backup internal hard drive. Point is, I'd be willing to bet that my knowledge is the top 2% of the non-computer geek public, but I still am astounded by how little I actually know.

At some point the amount of information that we need to know to keep our systems secure becomes overwhelming, and there just isn't enough time in the day.
