From my experience
of fixing these problems for clients here's a typical example.

Granny user A has been using dial up forever. Basically all she does is email and a little bit of surfing. Someone mentions to her that she can get DSL for $14.95 a month which is faster and cheaper than her dial up account costs her so she goes for it. Her "SP1 with no updates ever applied" machine is now online 24/7. Of course her DSL comes with only a modem so she has no firewall. Her anti-virus software, if she has any at all, has been expired since 2001.

She's infected within minutes of connecting to her fancy new DSL modem.

She wonders why her computer is getting slower and slower even though she has a new "fast" internet connection. She also wonders why she sees naked people popping up all of the time when she's trying to visit www.quiltingweekly.com.

This is a very common scenario.
