The problem is...
...you don't 'own' Windows in the same sense you own a car. You may own the media which you purchased, but the software itself is licensed, not owned. Microsoft is within its rights to validate that licensing in whatever manner it wishes, just as the public is free to refuse to license the product if it doesn't like the terms.

If this kind of validation had occurred when Windows had more of a stranglehold on the OS market, the complaints might have had more merit. Today, with the alternatives available, there's no excuse for complaining. Use something else, there are plenty of options.
