HW upgrade fixed problem ? Did they add more linux caches?
Responding to Shadetree here because of thread counter!

The article also stated that the problem was resolved within 4 hours by upgrading the hardware which means they now have the infrastructure to meet this demand. That is also impressive.

Lets see Could they instantly add more bandwidth into the choked site, probaly not. Could they change the topology of the distributed cache to increase bandwidth - um, yup! Could they simply queue up more uses and let them wait until bandwidth was available - up to some limit they can! Could they simply add more Windows servers to fix the problem ... probaly not unless it was a limit on the number of connected users who could have a session.

So, either they rearranged the network layer to remove bottlenecks and increase throughput, or, they added HW on the back end to handle more customers since the cacheing doesn't come from the back end it would have been business logic problems if it needed more servers.

So, no matter how you look at it, MS upgrade was broken, not designed to handle the load MS imposed on it ... and you claim they understand reliability and scalability! This is another example of a company claiming to be the best in the business which is obviously learning as they go ... at least now Sun will explain to them how this stuff works if they are willing to listen!
