You missed the point of the article
You are mistaken by saying, "The ability to serve up 50GB an hour to 4 million customers says something about scalability and robustness."

Because the WHOLE point of this article was to say:
"As a result, many customers found that the scan didn't work properly and they were NOT able to download the latest patches."

Not that if they actually did serve that many people in an hour I wouldn't be impressed. But I also have a desktop that CAN'T server 3-4 million customers an hour.

The basic problem is if there are over (let's say) 100 million copies of MS Windows XP out there. IF 10 percent of the machines are upgraded (and IT security in a companies would be right on top of it the first day), then that's 10 million updates the first day. They should have been prepared, even if personally I would not expect a storm of people to download the updates, they are running a business where the should have.
