Another Evelyn Wood grad, I see...
Let's repeat that very first line for those with comprehension problems:

"The crush of millions of Windows users trying to patch their computers overwhelmed Microsoft's update service for several hours after new security fixes..."

Notice that it didn't say "after Microsoft announced a hot new Media Player upgrade that allowed you to download nude vids of Britney Spears free of charge." No, it was because of (fill in the blank) __________________ (Choices-- A: "security fixes" or B: "psychic hedgehogs telepathically commanding a gazillion Windows users to get online and download MS patches at precisely the same instant just to make their OS and bundled apps more spiffy. And to get free nude Britney Spears vids."

And to provide tantalizing clues as to why a few gazillion Windows users might be a bit antsy about downloaded security fixes ASAP, here's a direct quote from Brian Valentine, Microsoft's senior VP of Windows development (Sept. 2002):

"'I'm not proud,' Valentine said, as he spoke to a crowd of developers here at the company's Windows .Net Server developer conference. 'We really haven't done everything we could to protect our customers ... Our products just aren't engineered for security.'
