You've got it good...
In the past 15 years, I've worked for 4 manufacturing companies. The smallest was 40 employees and $30M in annual revenue. The biggest was around 5000 employees and $300M in revenue. The biggest IT department was 5 people counting the IT manager, who was completely hands-off when it came to technology. He was a "thinker"... That was 1 developer, 1 network admin, 1 pc tech, 1 phone administrator that did crossover network admin stuff and the manager. The standard I've seen in real life is that somewhere between 1% and 1.5% of annual revenues go towards IT. Accounting, HR, tooling and maintenance all got a bigger piece of the pie than IT. This is why it doesn't surprise me in the slightest what a mess most small company IT shops are, if they even have an IT shop at all. I wish I could say you'd be surprised at the number of companies with no IT support staff whatsoever, but if you've been around long enough it probably wouldn't surprise you a bit. These are companies running Windows Server 2003, Exchange for email and sometimes even trying to run VPN and an internal web server. There are a lot of ticking time bombs sitting out there just waiting for someone to come along and blow them up.
