your cure is worse than the disease
"...the only email that makes it to my computer...is email from a party that is in my address book. Problem solved..."

This "solution" is no solution. Email from people or companies not in your address book can be valuable and important. (Your tactics falsely assume that there is nothing "out there" you might want or be interested in that you don't already know about.) You do not shoot your postman if he dares drop off letters addressed to you from unknown individuals, right? Yeah, the pile of junk catalogs and advertising circulars is a nuscance, but it won't kill you.

The spam problem is those endless pitches for penny stocks, replica watches/jewelry, software downloads, pharmacy drugs, weight loss scams, phishing ripoffs, and a dozen other bits of nonsense that show up over and over again. YOU can recognize it immediately, but the wonderful world of artificial intelligence is still dropping the ball on this big time.

Until some really smart software comes along, things are only gonna get worse in the spam department.
