Where's Georgie Ou to tell us how
running a locked down PC without AV is sooo totally safe?

From the article: "The Workstation Service is a key part of Windows that can't be turned off or easily protected by a firewall"

Does this mean if I run in a limited permission (security) account, it will scare this big bad exploit away? While I agree that everyday user accounts should have very limited rights, how to you protect yourself from vulnerabilities in the system and root services?

Oh yeah, these all went away with Vista - NOT. I doubt that we will ever be free of these types of vulnerabilities in windows or Linux or etc.

While AV may be a poor excuse for protection, it does have an important use, it watches the traffic and keeps an eye on the OS in a way that the OS maker cannot. It's kinda like the guy riding in the back of the armored car, it's another, independent, source of security. I will still be using AV for the foreseeable future.
