Linux (and most unix based systems) come with a version control system
On many Unix based systems, including Linux and BSD based systems, have RCS (Revision Control System) and CVS (Code Versioning System) which are derived from SCCS (Source Code Control System). SCCS has been in Unix since (at least) SVR3.2 in commercial releases.

Patch management is another issue, but such systems have and do exist.
